Merewether is the wave Newcastle is known for. It's the home break of four-time world champion Mark Richards, it's part of a National Surfing Reserve, and it sits next to the Merewether Ocean Baths, some of the largest ocean baths in the southern hemisphere.
What makes it work
Merewether isn't just one wave. Reef ledges at the southern end produce punchy rights and lefts on the right swell, and the beach running north towards Dixon Park has sand peaks that suit more people. It faces east and picks up swell from the south through to the north-east.
West to south-west winds are offshore. In summer, the north-east sea breeze is the usual afternoon problem, so early sessions are the rule.
The local scene
Newcastle has a big, proud surf community, and Merewether is its centre. The line-up is busy and skilled. Be patient, and keep to the beach peaks if you're new.
Every spot we watch has its own setup: which swell directions reach it, what size and period it needs to come alive, which winds blow offshore, and which tides suit the bank or reef. We check Merewether against all of that through the day, and you get one text when it all lines up. Never in the dark.
