Avoca is a small surf town on the Central Coast, about an hour and a half north of Sydney. It has a right-hand point at the southern end, beach peaks along the sand, and North Avoca just over the lagoon, so there's usually somewhere to surf.
Avoca Point and the beach
The point at the southern end wraps a south to south-east swell into a right-hander that can get long on a good day. The beach picks up more swell and works on a wider range of directions. West to south-west winds blow offshore along this stretch.
North Avoca, across the lagoon entrance, is more open to swell and often has peaks when the main beach is small. The lagoon can open after heavy rain, which shifts the banks at both.
Worth knowing
- The town fills up on summer weekends. Early sessions are worth it.
- Rocks at the point end matter on low tide.
- Copacabana to the south is a good alternative on a north-east wind.
We don't text on a forecast. We text when the live readings for Avoca (swell size, period, direction, wind and tide) all fall inside the window that particular break needs, and only in daylight.
