Maroubra Surf Guide: Why "The Bra" Is Punchier Than It Looks

Maroubra sits a few kilometres south of Bondi and gets a fraction of the tourist traffic, but locals will tell you it's not the easier option. It's a wide, exposed bay backed by beach and reef, and it has a reputation for being one of the punchier beaches on this stretch of coast — hence the old nickname "Mexico," for being the rougher end of the eastern suburbs lineup.

What Maroubra wants

Maroubra's bay is open enough to catch swell across a wide window — south through southeast and into the east and northeast — which is one reason it's rarely flat compared to more sheltered beaches nearby. A left-hand point break runs off the rocks at the southern end on the right swell, while the main stretch is beach and reef with both lefts and rights peeling off the banks. Needing a genuine swell with some period behind it (not just leftover windswell) to show its better side is part of why it holds size well without turning to mush.

Not a beginner's first wave

The bay's rip systems are strong enough that Maroubra is also home to one of the busiest surf lifesaving operations in the country, and the same exposure that makes it consistent also means it rarely gets genuinely small. If you're newer to surfing, a more sheltered beach on the same swell is the friendlier call; Maroubra is better suited to surfers who already know how to read a rip and handle some size.
