Bronte is the small bay just south of Tamarama on Sydney's eastern beaches. It looks gentle from the park above. It isn't. Bronte has a powerful shorebreak and a permanent rip along its southern side that's well known to every lifeguard in the area.
The rip
The rip at Bronte runs out along the southern rocks and is strong enough to have its own local nickname. Surfers sometimes use it to get out the back. Swimmers and newer surfers should stay well clear and stick to the flagged area. If you're unsure how rips work, read rip currents explained first.
The wave
Bronte catches south-east to east swell well, and the reef at the southern end can produce a punchy right on the right swell. The beach is short, so the line-up gets crowded. West winds are offshore.
Who it suits
Bronte is for confident surfers. If you're learning, Bondi's south end on a small day, or a more sheltered beach, is a better choice.
Every spot we watch has its own setup: which swell directions reach it, what size and period it needs to come alive, which winds blow offshore, and which tides suit the bank or reef. We check Bronte against all of that through the day, and you get one text when it all lines up. Never in the dark.
