Diggers Beach sits just north of Coffs Harbour, between Macauleys Headland and Diggers Headland. It's the beach most Coffs surfers check first, because it picks up swell when the harbour-side beaches are flat.
Why Diggers is the first check
The beach is open to swell from the north-east round to the south-east, and the headlands at either end hold sand in better-shaped banks than a long, straight beach. On a clean day there are peaks up and down the beach, with the headland ends usually the most organised.
West and north-west winds blow offshore. The afternoon north-easterly that's common in summer blows onshore, so mornings are the usual window.
Other options around Coffs
On big south swells, the more sheltered spots near the harbour, like the north wall and Gallows, can be cleaner. Further north, beaches like Sapphire and Emerald pick up similar swell. Diggers is the reliable middle ground.
We don't text on a forecast. We text when the live readings for Diggers Beach (swell size, period, direction, wind and tide) all fall inside the window that particular break needs, and only in daylight.
