Angourie Point Surf Guide: Yamba's Classic Right-Hander

Angourie is a small village just south of Yamba, and its point is one of Australian surfing's most respected waves. It's a right-hander that wraps around a rocky headland at the edge of Yuraygir National Park, and it's a National Surfing Reserve.

A big-swell point

Angourie faces north-east, sheltered from much of the swell that hits the open coast. It needs a large south or south-east swell to wrap into the point. When that happens with a south-west wind, it can produce long, powerful walls and barrels over a rocky bottom.

On smaller swells, the beaches around Yamba, like Spooky Beach and Angourie Back Beach, catch more energy and are often the better bet.

Respect the line-up

Angourie has a strong, long-standing local community. Visitors who arrive on a good day expecting to share the peak will have a hard time. Sit wide, wait, and take the waves that come to you. Our surf etiquette basics apply double here.

The point gets good a few times a season. Everyone who lives there knows exactly when.

Getting there

The point is a short walk from the car park at the end of the road. The freshwater Blue and Green Pools, old quarry pits behind the headland, are a well-known stop for a rinse after a session.

Every spot we watch has its own setup: which swell directions reach it, what size and period it needs to come alive, which winds blow offshore, and which tides suit the bank or reef. We check Angourie against all of that through the day, and you get one text when it all lines up. Never in the dark.
