Yallingup Surf Guide: Main Break, Rabbit Hill, Injidup & Moses Rock

Yallingup is where competitive surfing in Western Australia effectively started, and the stretch of reef and point breaks around it still produces some of the state's best waves. It's not one wave, though โ€” the four breaks below sit within a few kilometres of each other and want noticeably different amounts of swell to turn on.

Yallingup Main Break: the classic reef

What Main Break actually takes
Best swellSW, W, WSW
Best windE (offshore)
CharacterReef break, needs real size and period

Main Break is the reef that put Yallingup on the map, and it needs a genuine groundswell with some real period behind it before it shows its best side. This isn't a wave that turns on with a weak, short-period swell โ€” it wants the real thing.

Rabbit Hill: the heaving right

What Rabbit Hill actually takes
Best swellSW, W
Best windE (offshore), wind-sensitive
CharacterHeaving, powerful right-hander

Rabbit Hill needs the biggest, longest-period swell of the four to get going, and it's more particular about wind than the others nearby โ€” a right-hander with real power once it's working, but not something that comes alive on a marginal day.

Injidup: the exposed point

What Injidup actually takes
Best swellW specifically
Best windS (offshore)
CharacterExposed left-hand reef point, intermediate/advanced

Injidup is pickier about swell angle than the others โ€” it wants a specifically westerly swell rather than the broader SW-to-W window that works elsewhere nearby. It's a genuinely exposed point with a reef bottom, holds swell well from mid to high tide, and comes with real rock and marine-life hazards that make it better suited to surfers who already know the area.

Moses Rock: the lower bar

What Moses Rock actually takes
Best swellSW, W, WSW
Best windE (offshore)
CharacterLeft-breaking reef, consistent, lower swell threshold

Moses Rock needs noticeably less swell height and period than Main Break or Rabbit Hill to start working, which makes it the more consistent option on a smaller day. It's still a reef break with real hazards โ€” rocks, urchin, and isolation are worth respecting โ€” so "lower bar" here means less swell required, not necessarily an easy wave.

The takeaway

Same stretch of coast, four different swell requirements. Checking "Yallingup" as one spot will mislead you about which of these four breaks is actually working.

If the swell's on the smaller side, Moses Rock is the one most likely to still be working. If a big, long-period groundswell is inbound, that's when Main Break and Rabbit Hill come into their own.
