Surfline Just Put All Its Cameras Behind a Paywall

Dude, It's Firing! Team · 5 min read

If you've opened the Surfline app to check a cam recently and hit a paywall instead, you're not imagining it. As of September 29, 2026, watching any Surfline live cam requires a Premium membership — full stop.

What actually changed

Surfline's forecast, reports, buoy readings, and tide data are still free to check. It's specifically the live camera feeds — all 1,300+ of them — that now sit behind Premium. Surfline's own support article frames it as funding the cost of running and maintaining that camera network. Whatever the reasoning, the result is the same: the thing a lot of people used Surfline for — a quick visual gut-check before driving to the beach — now has a subscription attached.

This affects Australian surfers directly, not just the US. Surfline acquired Coastalwatch — Australia's own long-running surf cam and forecast network — back in 2019, and those cams now run on Surfline's platform and Surfline's rules. If you grew up checking Coastalwatch cams for free, this is the same change hitting you from a different angle.

Surfers are not happy about it

The reaction online has been loud and mostly negative. Threads calling the move "enshitification" — building a free habit, then charging for the thing people actually relied on — have been circulating, and plenty of people say they've deleted the app outright rather than pay for cam access.

"What f***ing use are they if I can't even check a live cam for 10 seconds?" — a fairly representative reaction from surfers online.

A text alert isn't a camera — and that's kind of the point

We want to be straight with you here: we don't have cameras, and we're not pretending a text alert replaces watching a live feed of the lineup. If you want to actually see the wave before you commit, a cam does something we don't.

But a lot of people weren't using the cam to study the lineup — they were using it to answer one question: is it even worth checking today? That's a different job, and it's the one job a real-time text alert is built for. We've already set the threshold for your spot, and we text you the moment conditions actually cross it — no app to open, no cam to load, no subscription to watch a parking lot on a flat day.

Even before the cam paywall, Surfline gave you homework

Here's the part that doesn't get talked about enough: even when the cams were free, Surfline's free tier was never actually telling you whether to go. It was handing you the raw ingredients — swell height, period, direction, wind speed, wind direction, tide — and leaving you to do the work of combining them into an answer for your specific spot. That's a real skill, and plenty of surfers enjoy it. But it's also homework, every single time you want to check, for every spot you care about.

A cam used to be the shortcut around that homework — a 10-second look that answered the question faster than reading five separate charts. Now that shortcut costs at least roughly AU$100 a year too (more if you want the ads gone). So the free tier hasn't gotten any easier to use; the one thing that made it fast just got a price tag.

A threshold alert does the homework once, up front, instead of every time you check. We've already defined what "good" looks like at your spot — the swell, period, wind, and tide combination that actually works there — and we text you only when the real data crosses that line. No daily chart-reading, no cam required.

What it actually costs

Surfline Premium with Ads (cams unlocked)~AU$100/yr*
Surfline Premium (cams, ad-free)~AU$172/yr*
Dude, It's Firing! — Locals Only (5 spots)$19.99/yr
Dude, It's Firing! — Coast Rat (10 spots)$29.99/yr

*Approximate AUD conversion from Surfline's US pricing at current exchange rates — actual local app store pricing may vary. Even our biggest plan, tracking 10 spots, costs less per year than the cheapest Surfline Premium tier that unlocks cameras. And there's a free tier if you just want to try it on one spot first.

The takeaway

If you're one of the people who just deleted Surfline over this, you're probably not looking for another camera subscription — you're looking for a faster way to know when it's actually worth going. That's exactly what we built.
