Duranbah (D-Bah) Surf Guide: Where to Go When the Points Are Flat

Duranbah, or D-Bah, is the beach on the NSW side of Point Danger, tucked between the headland and the Tweed River training wall. When the famous points around the corner are flat, D-Bah is often the one spot on the southern Gold Coast with waves.

Why it picks up so much more swell

The points at Snapper, Greenmount and Kirra face north and need swell to wrap around to reach them. D-Bah faces east, straight into the swell. That makes it consistent: it catches north-east windswell in summer, east swell, and plenty of south swell that barely touches the points.

The training wall at the river mouth holds sand in peaks, so there are usually rights and lefts on offer, often punchy and hollow. Bodyboarders love it for the same reason.

The catch

Because it faces east, the south-east trade winds that groom the points blow cross-onshore at D-Bah. Mornings before the wind are the usual window, and it's often best on light westerly days. It's also busy, especially on weekends when everyone has had the same idea.

Our alert for D-Bah is tuned to this break alone, so a swell that's perfect for the beach next door won't set it off. When the swell, wind and tide line up together, you get a text.
