Alexandra Headland Surf Guide: The Sunshine Coast's Everyday Point

Alexandra Headland, Alex to locals, sits between Mooloolaba and Maroochydore in the middle of the Sunshine Coast. It catches far more swell than Noosa, so it's the spot people surf when the famous points are flat.

Point and beach

Swell bends around the headland into a right-hand point at the southern end of the beach, with beach-break peaks running north towards Maroochydore. The point needs a south-east swell and a southerly wind to line up. The beach works on more swell directions and suits lighter winds.

Because it's more exposed than Noosa, Alex is consistent. That also means it's often windier, and the south-east trades can make the beach messy by late morning.

Who it suits

Alex is one of the better all-round spots on the coast. Beginners can find gentle waves on the beach on small days, and the point gives intermediates a proper wave without the Noosa crowd.
